MUMMIFIED

A powerful new play about boarding school
by Marcus Pollett

Synopsis

In the late 1960s, Boy (aged 8) is sent away for a ten-year stretch at an all-boy boarding school in the distant district of peaks. What prompted Mother – ignorant of any institutional malevolence – to abandon the child she dotes on into the care of people she knows nothing about? Mummified by the experience, he careens through life causing havoc and damage to those who care for him, and equally to himself. Sobering up is just the beginning, and the yearned-for journey back home is long, arduous and not guaranteed. Only providence – in the shape of winged allies – can set him free. Will the birds come?

From the Creator

"I was powerless and without agency as a young boy at prep school, and now I feel I have agency. It's certainly generating a feeling of empowerment... I started to focus on doing what Gabrielle Roth called 'turning suffering into art'."
— Marcus Pollet

About the Production

Mummified is an autobiographical work that courageously explores themes of childhood trauma, institutional abuse, and the long journey toward healing. Marcus Pollet transforms his personal experiences into a powerful theatrical piece that examines the complex relationship between mother and child, the impact of forced separation, and the search for justice and understanding.

This intimate production offers audiences a raw, honest exploration of how childhood experiences shape our adult lives, and the possibility of finding freedom through artistic expression and the metaphorical "winged allies" that guide us toward healing.
